With the heat of summer almost entirely behind us, it’s time to embrace a new season of new albums. Mitski dials up the majesty on her intimate and intense seventh LP, The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We. Chrissie Hynde regroups the Pretenders for Relentless; the long-running group’s 12th album is full of signature energy and emotion. As seen at their recent Free at Noon appearance, The Record Company are firing on all cylinders on their aptly titled 4th Album. Progressive bluesman Buffalo Nichols embraces (and bucks) tradition on The Fatalist, his bold sophomore release.
New Wave revivalists Nation of Language channel wide-eyed ‘80s hitmakers like OMD and Ultravox on their third album, Strange Disciple. Vagabon teamed up with former Vampire Weekend member Rostam for a major sonic shift away from her folk roots; Sorry I Haven’t Called is a rewarding slice of modern electronic R&B. Despite its imposing title, End marks a new beginning for Texas instrumental rockers Explosions in the Sky; their first album in seven years is waiting for you to get lost in its grandeur.
