Today’s Live Friday performer, Birdie Busch, has built quite the fan base for herself in the Philly area–her blend of blues, folk, and rock have made her plenty of fans at the station as well as the city. She performed at the XPoNential fest this past July, and everyone was glad to have her grace an XPN stage again.
Singing of everything from luck to dangerous missions of the heart, Birdie’s recognizable, powerful alto is well-employed. On stage today, in cowboy boots and a dress, she was backed by an upright bass, three guitars (including a slide), and percussion. Her latest album, Everyone Will Take You In, came out this year, and Busch has garnered even more fans with its emotive power. Including the fans filling the World Cafe today.
And, be sure to catch Birdie Busch at Johnny Brenda’s at 9pm on Friday, September 17, too. But you can listen here if you missed today’s performance.
Set List:
1. Rabbit’s Foot
2. Joey
3. Secret Hour
4. City of Brotherly Love
5. Trap Door
6. Heel to Toe
7. Hometown Boredom
8. Wild Mountain Honey
We stumbled upon a classic song from the DC based Velocity Girl called “My Forgotten Favorite” which pretty much dropped a bomb on the indierock nation when it was released back in 1991. We hope you agree that It still sounds great today.
Cee Lo (of Gnarls Barkley fame) has cleaned-up his latest single so now XPN play it on the air. The re-done version is called “Forget You” & maybe you heard Michaela play it on the XPN Morning Show .
We’re big fans of Pete Yorn and are excited to hear the news of a new album coming out in September on Vagrant Records. But wait. Vagrant? Not Sony? So what’s up with that? Sources tell us that he’s still on Sony, however Pete’s new record is coming out on Vagrant on September 28th. The album is self-titled and was produced by Frank Black around the time Pete recorded his last album Back And Fourth. Here’s a track from the album via Magnet.
Y’all remember Laetitia Sadier, right? Of course you do! She of Stereolab (and a side project called Monade Ms. Sadier is releasing a solo album called The Trip on Drag City on September 21st. This new tune is pretty classic; patience is rewarded when it begins to pick up full-on hypnotic ‘Lab” style then comes down just slowly enough for a walk along the beach. This is nice.

It’s a revival, this Barn Rock, a soulful meander through life’s richness and darkness. The opening plea of “(I want my) Truck Back,” an electric ode to a Toyota SR-5 truck they sold for a dollar, weaves the history of the truck from the Poconos to Chinqeteague (maybe the only time that word appears in a rock and roll song).
Click hear to hear the new (old) Bruce Springsteen song, “Save My Love” that we wrote about here. Bruce’s ‘The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story’ will be released on November 16th. Everybody form a line (to buy it).
