The Best Concert I Ever Saw

by Don Rhoades, New Hope, PA

The experience was on a terrible night in that John Lennon had been killed the night before. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were scheduled to play the Spectrum that night and there was the possibility the concert would be cancelled. But the show went on — Bruce came out by himself and talked about the first song he ever learned on the guitar — Twist and Shout — the way John Lennon played it and how it was a mean world sometimes but we need to keep on with the music and boy did they rock that night. I had seen the band several times before including those great shows at the Tower but that night at the Spectrum with all that emotion in the air was electric. It transcended any show I ever experienced before or since. And I think the band must have really felt it. The expressions on their faces when they looked at each other seemed to say — this is amazing!
