I’m not a gaga Elvis fan, but I’ve always been fond of this musical moment becuase it shows Elvis’s humor and “realness” What makes it special for me is that I was sitting in my car looking at the grand canyon for the first time when I heard it. It was summer 1992 and I had just driven across country from Philly to go to school Arizona State University and stopped to see the grand canyon. My friend and I were listening to an Elvis retrospective on public radio and heard this clip.

In the middle of signing “Are you lonesome tonight,” Elvis starts laughing uncontrollably and says “Do you wish you had hair.” I’ve heard a few versions as to the events leading up to his ad lib, but it involves a man with an apparent toupee! You can hear the clip here and here.
