Introducing My Daughter to a Free at Noon Concert

by Toni McCormick, Upper Black Eddy, PA

This summer I introduced my 9-year old daughter, Sarah, to one of the free at noon concerts at World Cafe Live. Up until this time, WCL was an unknown to her other than some place Mom went with her friends (and perhaps even a threat since it took Mom away from her).

We entered the very dimly lit, crowded venue and made our way up to the mezzanine. Sarah was unusually quiet, taking in the entire scene. The Polyphonic Spree appeared and exploded with their exuberant symphonic rock. She was mesmerized. I noticed her counting the many members of the band. She leaned over to me and whispered, “There’s even a harp, Mom, like you’ve always wanted to play.” I didn’t realize that I had even told her that.

She sat somewhat stiffly, very still and focused. This was all new to her and I guess she wasn’t quite certain how she should act. I wasn’t quite certain if she was even enjoying it. The lead singer looked up to the mezzanine and waved. Sarah glanced over her shoulder, then shyly waved back. I, on the other hand, had no doubt he was waving directly at us and enthusiastically waved back. And they just kept playing and playing. It was certainly one of the best free-at-noons I’d ever attended.

Afterwards we purchased the ‘deluxe’ version of “Fragile Army” which came with a patch. I didn’t realize the impact on Sarah until later that evening. We were driving when she asked me to put in our new CD. We opened all the windows and sunroof, stuck our arms out the windows (which we’re never allowed to do) and belted out “Running Away” at the top of our lungs. She called all of her friends and told them how cool the concert was and promptly sewed the “Fragile Army” patch on her jean jacket. I will always cherish that fine summer afternoon, hoping that I opened a door for her.

Who knows, maybe she’ll submit it as one of her most memorable music moments 20 years from now.
