The moment that changed the way I listen to radio
By Andy, Columbus, NJ
It was the start of my second year of what was then Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT), September 1970, and FM radio was in its infancy. Sure, we had radio before. We listened to the Beatles on WIBG-AM, and Woodstock had happened the year before. The music was there but the way that it was being delivered was evolving. My pothead roommate in the fraternity house had gotten a brand new stereo system. I watched him set it up the components and he tuned in to WNEW-FM out of NYC. The first thing that I heard was Quicksilver Messenger Service’s “What about me.” I was hooked. I was blown away. I was in awe. The sound was clear and loud (”no static at all.”) There, at that moment, I was changed forever.
