666: Del Shannon tops the charts with “Runaway”
Taking his name from a combination of the Cadillac Coupe DeVille and his friend Mark Shannon, Del Shannon shot to the top of the charts in 1961 with “Runaway.” The song’s signature organ-like backdrop is actually produced by an early version of a synthesizer, called a musitron or clavioline. That same sound featured in “Runaway” recently topped the charts again, this time in the White Stripes’ “Icky Thump.”
