649: James Brown, “Say It Loud I’m Black & I’m Proud”

“Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud” is notable as one of Godfather of Soul James Brown’s signature songs and a significant “Black Power” anthem. Released in 1968 as a two-part single, it held the top spot on the R&B singles chart for six weeks, and subsequently peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the first recording to showcase Fred Wesley, trombonist and future leader of The J.B.’s.
