653: The Great White Rhode Island Night Club Fire

On February 20, 2003, numerous concert goers attending a Great White concert at The Station in West Warwick in Rhode Island were killed or seriously injured when a pyrotechnics display lost control and caused a swift-moving fire. Ultimately 100 people died with approximately 200 people seriously injured. It was one of the deadliest night club fires in U.S. history. The fire began when the band were playing their opening song “Desert Moon” when suddenly the stage became engulfed in flames set off by pyrotechnics. A stampede to exit the club ultimately blocked the exits. The club, which was required to have a sprinkler system, did not have one. Great White’s tour manager Daniel Biechele was sentenced to 15 years in prison, with four to serve and 11 years suspended, plus three years probation, for his role in setting off the nightclub fire. Club owners Jeffrey A. and Michael A. Derderian, were initially fined $1.07 million but ultimately the charges were dropped.
