470: Diana Ross formally introduces The Jackson Five to the public
![]()
In 1969, Motown label released The Jackson 5’s debut album Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5. Diana Ross’ “discovery” of the Jackson 5 was part of Motown’s marketing scheme to promote the boys, as evident by the album’s title. In actuality, Marlon, Jermaine, Tito, Jackie and Michael Jackson were discovered by Motown artists Bobby Taylor and Gladys Knight. However, Diana Ross did formally introduce the group in concert and on television as part of promotional plan. The album combined elements of pop and soul and is primarily recognized for the hit “I Want You Back,” which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for a week.
