480: Liz Phair records Exile in Guyville
Liz Phair released her debut album Exile in Guyville June 22, 1993, declaring the album to be her song-by-song response to the Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street. Released on indie label Matador Records, the album was a combination of new songs and songs from her Girly Sounds demo tapes that had been making its way through her native Chicago. Phair has been criticized and reviled for her honest and sexually explicit lyrics. The album is considered by many to be one of the defining indie rock albums of the 90s, perfectly capturing the low-fi sound and DIY aesthetic that characterized many indie albums of that time.
