390: KISS brings their theatricality to the stage

Alice Cooper did it, so did David Bowie and the New York Dolls. But compared to the band Kiss, those rockers applied make-up with a light touch. Kiss emerged in character in 1973 - Gene Simmons was the Demon, Peter Criss a Cat, Ace Frehey “The Spaceman”, and Paul Stanley “The Starchild”. And whether it was the gimmick, the anthemic music or a combination of both, Kiss was one of the most popular bands of the 1970s. Sensing the need to reinvent itself the band took off the makeup at an MTV concert in 1983.
