394: Ike and Tina Turner release Proud Mary

Revered as one of the most explosive duos in R&B history, Ike and Tina Turner’s equally explosive personal saga has almost overshadowed their incendiary music. Though the duo recorded an impeccable string of blistering rock-funk such as “A Fool in Love”, “Nutbush City Limits”, the Phil Spector-produced “River Deep Mountain High” as well as numerous covers that frequently surpassed the originals, one jam kills ‘em all – their powerful rendition of CCR’s “Proud Mary”. Opening with an impossibly sultry spoken word monologue, their version detonates into the ultimate no-holds barred horn-driven throw down. Live, Tina and The Ikettes’ dance moves were just as fiercely frenetic. Ike and Tina’s version earned them a Grammy and was inducted (along with the duo) into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
