380: The Police break up
Officially, the Police never actually broke up, but when Sting released a double live album in 1986 that featured songs by the Police without the Police, it was pretty clear he found their chemistry less than crucial. The band had toured for over a year following 1983’s Synchronicity, an album that has sold more in the U.S. than their other four combined, and it was clear a break was necessary. Sting made a jazzy solo album, The Dream Of The Blue Turtles, while Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland made film soundtracks and significantly less popular jazzy solo projects of their own. The band reunited for some Amnesty International gigs in 1986 and entered the studio to make some new tracks for their upcoming hits album, but only a tepid rewrite of “Don’t Stand So Close To Me” was completed. Sting quickly released the aforementioned Bring On The Night and another jazzy solo album, Nothing Like The Sun, leaving Andy and Stew to their film soundtracks until hell froze over earlier this year.
