198: Sex Pistols release Anarchy In The UK

The Sex Pistols released their debut single “Anarchy In The UK” on November 26, 1976. It was the only Sex Pistols recording released by EMI, and reached number 38 on the UK Singles Chart before EMI dropped the group in January, 1977, right after the televised Bill Grundy incident where profanities, open drunkeness, and general behavioral issues made the record agency drop them. The song later appeared on the album Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols. The lyrics take a poke at several political/paramilitary organizations prominent at the time, comparing them to the UK: the MPLA, the UDA, and the IRA. it is considered the second “punk” single to ever be released, preceded only by The Damned’s “New Rose”.
