146: Where Did Our Love Go? becomes the first of 12 #1 hits for The Supremes

This song “Where Did Our Love Go?” was originally pitched to the Marvelettes by the songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. The Marvelettes turned it down and The Supremes picked it up, with no idea that it would not only end their eight-single drought but become the first of 12 number one hits — more than any other group during the 60s. In fact, the lead singer who it was originally intended for, Gladys Horton, sang in a lower pitch than Ross, so she had to perform the song with her voice dropped deep and heavy. The group even hated the song when it was pitched, something about the 70 times they use the word “baby” must have contributed to the fact that they thought it was “childish” and that it turned out badly. Nonetheless, it worked and the Supremes were on the way to music history.
