Ian Hunter

Whether fronting glam-rock pioneer group Mott the Hoople or releasing politically charged albums nearly forty years into his career, Ian Hunter has never been one to hold back.

Ironically, though, Hunter’s 20th solo album When I’m President is perhaps his most apolitical record of the millenium so far. After Shrunken Heads (2007) and Man Overboard (2009) showcased Hunter’s frustration with President George Bush, Hunter bares his own soul more on the conveniently titled When I’m President, which was released in September. Gently introspective numbers like “Black Tears” and “Fatally Flawed” balance out rockers like “I Don’t Know What You Want” and “Wild Bunch,” proving that Hunter’s trademark rock and roll versatility is still intact.

After Mott the Hoople dissolved in 1974, Hunter embarked on a solo career that stalled in the ‘80s. It took the death of Hunter’s close friend and Spiders From Mars guitarist Mick Ronson in 1993 to reinvigorate his music career.

Hear Hunter discuss his creative renaissance and play three tracks from When I’m President on this edition of World Cafe with host David Dye.
