Jovanotti

Nearly a quarter-century into his career, pioneering Italian rapper Jovanotti is more popular than ever in his homeland. He is a megastar, selling out stadiums and producing No. 1 hits like L’ombelico del mondo. Taking on issues from poverty in Africa to AIDS, he’s like an Italian Bono.

And now he has brought his music to the U.S. in hopes of reaching a whole new audience. His new record Italia 1988-2012 is a retrospective spanning his career, and it’s his first album ever released in America.

Although his early records owed much to American rap, by the ‘90s, he was drawing influences from Italian ballads, Latin pop, and urban hip-hop, and is now known for Italian pop.

His new evolution is becoming an American. He moved to New York this fall and began touring the U.S. in October. Now inspired and energized by New York life - splitting his time between NY and Italy, the Italian pop giant should make a name for himself in the States very quickly.

In this session of World Cafe, hear Jovanotti perform several songs live and discuss his move to the U.S. with his wife, daughter and two dogs.
