This Friday at noon, take one excellent lunch break with world-renowned duo Angus and Julia Stone.
The brother and sister act are known across the globe for their ability to mesh two strong, separate
vocal styles into a beautiful, artfully mixed combination. Julia's 'fairy-tale', light tones twine
around Angus'rough, emotive baritone in ways that make fans and critics alike assert that "...with
the most basic tools, the Stones build something lovely and lasting." (BBC Music)
The two siblings had an early start on their musical careers. Both their parents were musicians in
the same project, and while the two young children were still very small, their father had Julia
playing trumpet and Angus playing trombone in the school band. The two began to collaborate in 2006,
each having built experience and style as solo artists beforehand. The two write their own
material separately, then come together for harmonies and structure.
In 2006, the two released their debut EP "Chocolate and Cigarettes". Plenty of airplay, festival
performances, and word-of-mouth began to build A+J's reputation. Since their debut, just four years
ago, the young artists have risen to the top of the charts in multiple countries, released several
more EPs and two full-lengths, and been nominated for numerous awards. They've shared stages with
big names such as Donavon Frankenreiter and Martha Wainwright, and toured internationally.
The unstoppable duo's latest album, "Down The Way", was released just this March. They produced
the album themselves, and the result has more of a bedroom folk sound than their previous work. Though
the two hail from Australia, "Down The Way" could be called lush Americana. There's little doubt
that their recording time spent in the American West had more than a small influence on the album's
dusty guitar sound.
A+J will be touring North America through June, but shows are already beginning to sell out. Be sure
not to miss this Live Friday performance.
