As a teenager growing up in the bustling New Zealand rock scene, Neil Finn idolized his older brother's band,
Split Enz, and only wished for a chance to join. In 1977, at the tender age of 19, Finn (vocals, guitar, piano) got his wish
and was thrown into the touring inferno of New Zealand's primary force in the New Wave rock scene. However, after seven years
of success, Finn and fellow Split Enz member Paul Hester (drums) decided that they wanted to start a "3 piece band
that could fit into one rental car." Bassist Nick Seymour teamed up with Finn and Hester to form the group
"Crowded House", named after the close living quarters which the group shared upon their move into Los Angeles.
Crowded House immedietly gained a loyal fanbase in Australia and New Zealand because of their Split Enz days, but had difficulty getting their name out within the States. This all changed once the group released their hit single "Don't Dream It's Over." The song became an international hit, and reached #2 on the April, 1987 Hot 100 list in the United States. Crowded House capped of their big year by winning the 1987 MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist. While 1987 may have been the height of commercial success for Crowded House, the band did go on to release three more pop-rock classics, each reaching most of it's popularity in Austrailia, before an eventual break-up in 1996.
For 10 years Neil Finn and Nick Seymour embarked on different projects until tragedy brought them back together. Orginal band member and longtime friend Paul Hester committed suicide 2005, leading the remaining members of Crowded House to reconnect. What resulted was a band reuinion and two new albums. In 2007 "Time On Earth" was released and warmly recieved as a classic Crowded House album, full of "deeply personal pop songs and deceptively tricky melodies", according to Pitchfork Magazine. The group was clearly excited to be back on the Crowded House train, and just two years later released 2009's "Intriguer." The new album has been heralded as one of the group's best, and more of a full-band effort than "Time On Earth", which reveals that the group may be fully adjusted to their new lineup.
