Folkie Suzanne Vega Rocks On New Album And Has Hip-Hop Cred!

Live Friday, Long-running singer-songwriter and XPN favorite Suzanne Vega returns to Philadelphia for a SOLD OUT Free at Noon concert. You can still Listen Live.

Vega's discography spans nearly 30 years, from her mid-80s beginnings to her breakout 1987 release Solitude Standing – which gave us the song "Tom's Diner" and its ubiquitous dance remix by DNA. Vega's output has been steady since then; she played XPoNential Music Festival in 2007 in support of the album Beauty and Crime and is set to release her latest record, Tales from the Realm of the Queens of Pentacles, on February 18th via her own Amanuensis Productions label.

Vega says the new record tells stories "about the material world, the spirit world, and how they intersect." The album was produced by Gerry Leonard, David Bowie's longtime musical director, and features songs inspired by the Rolling Stones as well as a track that samples 50 Cent's "Candy Shop." Vega heads out on a two-month European tour in late January; her Free at Noon set is her only Philadelphia appearance before she leaves. Tune in at noon in Friday, January 17th, or RSVP to see the show in person at World Cafe Live.

We figured we'd see it sometime... Suzanne Vega has delivered her "New York City album", a collection of 11 tunes that revolve around life in "The Big Apple" where Vega was raised and has lived ever since. It's not a new idea. Lots of artists (Lou Reed, for example on his 1989 New York album) have used this muse before. Vega has done it with a tremendous amount of style, and her first new release in six years is clearly one of her best.
