Her businessman son, Boolie, hires Hoke, a thoughtful, unemployed black man to serve as his mother's chauffeur. Henry Horenstein: SHOW
From January 29 through April 3, Gallery 339 is pleased to present an exhibition by photographer Henry Horenstein. The exhibition corresponds with the release of Horenstein’s latest book, SHOW, published by Pond Press in a limited edition. Since 2001, Horenstein has explored the on-stage and off-stage world of the burlesque resurgence of recent years. During the latter half of the 20th century, burlesque had deteriorated from a rich theatrical tradition into merely strip clubs; the emphasis going from sexy to sex. Since the mid 1990s, the neo-burlesque movement has revived and updated traditional burlesque, returning the emphasis to the “tease,” rather than the “strip.” Like earlier burlesque, its contemporary form embraces style and humor, and events encompass a range of performance types, including classic striptease, modern dance, comedy, drag, and an array of other “variety” acts. As with his earlier profiles of country music, horse racing, and baseball, Horenstein’s individual portraits come together as a compelling look at an intriguing subset of American art and entertainment.

Arden Theatre Company presents: Romeo and Juliet
Arden Theatre Company presents William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet from February 25-April 11, under the direction of Matt Pfeiffer and featuring a diverse ensemble cast of Philadelphia favorites. This story of love, violence and the consequences of both brings one of the English language’s greatest stories to life on the Arden’s F. Otto Haas stage. While the story of Romeo and Juliet has been in human consciousness for centuries, the Arden’s production challenges preconceptions of the play, stripping the story down to focus on characters and language. When Shakespeare’s company first presented Romeo and Juliet , they made use of the resources, knowledge and clothing of the time. The Arden’s production will bring a similar sense of familiarity and immediacy to the play, pairing modern fashions and contemporary compositions with handheld weapons and a simple stage reminiscent of Shakespeare’s Globe.

March 28 Best of Baroque: The Sounds of London of the 1740s
This finale to the Junior Baroque Music Festival's weekend immersion in the Baroque is our second performance in the beautiful State Theatre and promises to be a spectacular production of son e lumière fitting to Handel and Pergolesi, the opera masters of the 18th century. A "Band of Seventy Musicians are to play the Musick wch is compos'd by M.r Handel," the "Royal Fireworks Suite" of 1749, hastily assembled by M.r Handel to celebrate King George's War and the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. There will be visual fireworks and sonic triumphs. Also on the program is Handel's Suite No. 7 in g minor, the movements played by various pianists in baroque style. Because the concert falls in Holy Week, young singers and instrumentalists will perform duets from Pergolesi's wrenchingly emotional "Stabat Mater" to a backdrop of La Pietà. Between these masterworks, selected soloists perform baroque pieces worked on in the Saturday master classes. The guest artists of international early music fame have directed the master classes and will perform alongside the young musicians in the masterworks. Sunday, March 28 at 3pm Price: $10*
