Jon Langford photo credit Nero's House of Women John Langford has been at the core of punk-country expression from the start--and his latest album is more proof of that fact, and just adds one more entry into this man's list of formidable achievements. As described in the Chicago Tribune, this "punk-rock pioneer, a leading light of alt-country, a troubadour for our times, a musicians’ mentor, a visual artist of uncommon skill, a singer-songwriter who writes with the authority of having lived a life rather just having imagined it" is not to be taken for granted.

Many probably remember Langford getting his start as a drummer with punk band The Mekons, and since then he's been in involved in numerous projects playing numerous parts. From Waco Brothers to Killer Shrews to visual art to his current group, Jon Langford and Skull Orchard, he's evolved but kept basic folk and punk always close to his work.

Old Devils is his latest release, with Skull Orchard, is evidence that the man is not "mellowing in his old age," as Popmatters reviewed it. It addresses issues personal and public, from insecurity to homelessness, and it does it in an extremely effective manner--with music that perfectly complements the message.

Don't miss this week's Live Friday, with Langford and Skull Orchard on stage at World Cafe Live. It's free and it's a great way to start the weekend.
