Internships: Blues Show

Blues Programming & Production Assistant

(Min. 4 hours per week)

Duties: This intern will prepare and enter music for production of upcoming blues shows and features for local Blues Show. Tasks will include converting files into different formats for various uses and applications; writing, editing, proofreading and fact-checking scripts; editing and mixing audio for the programs; recording interviews; audition music and suggest selections and topics; assist in responding to listener email; updating and maintenance of Philadelphia-area blues concert calendar.

Qualifications: This intern should have an interest in and some knowledge of blues and jazz music, both traditional and contemporary. Experience in writing and researching is also helpful, as is experience with (or interest in learning) audio production. Interest in radio, and public radio in particular, is also important.

Since a fair amount of training is involved, we are particularly looking for a candidate who can make a commitment to a full school year.

Program Descriptions:

The Blues Show is a five-hour local blues show with a 29-year history that covers blues from 1920 to the present, with emphasis on more recent recordings, and on straight-ahead blues as opposed to blues rock. The Blues Show airs Saturday night from 7pm to midnight (ET), at 88.5 FM WXPN Philadelphia & online at http://www.xpn.org.

"The Blues File" is a short (~3 minute) weekly feature on a topic of interest in blues music. "The Blues File" is heavily edited, mixed, and produced. It involves much research, listening, writing, fact-checking, and editing. "The Blues File" is archived at http://www.xpn.org/blues and is available as a podcast.

The Blues & Beyond, a new weekly program following The Blues Show on WXPN, midnight - 1am (ET), Saturday night into Sunday morning, at 88.5 FM WXPN Philadelphia, and online at http://www.xpn.org. The Blues & Beyond includes blues, jazz, international, folk, and new age music, with a theme of engaging texture, rhythmic appeal, and blues-like tonality running through the music. The Blues & Beyond is a new show very much evolving at this time.

The University of Pennsylvania is an EEO/Affirmative Action employer.
