Matt Nathanson to Headline Annual Benefit Concert for WXPN Musicians On Call on February 20, 2014

All proceeds support WXPN Musicians On Call, the innovative program that promotes healing through the power of music and brings live performances to the bedsides of hospital-bound patients. "We are grateful to Matt Nathanson and Chris Kasper, along with all of the local musicians involved year-round, for their support of WXPN Musicians On Call," said Helen Leicht, host of the midday and XPN Local Show. "As we continue to develop WXPN Musicians On Call, it is especially significant to also recognize its many volunteers," she added.

Singer-songwriter Matt Nathanson released his tenth album, Last of the Great Pretenders, on Vanguard Records in July. Based in San Francisco, he has built up a loyal fan base through introspective songwriting and extensive touring, and is known for live shows that feature as much humor as music. Based in Philadelphia but a true road warrior at heart, Chris Kasper is a songwriter with a style rooted in folk, rock and blues. He recently released his fourth album, Bagabones, in October.

Since 2004, WXPN-FM has partnered with the national, non-profit Musicians On Call initiative in leading its Philadelphia chapter, touching the lives of more than 50,000 patients and families throughout the Philadelphia region. During this time, more than 100 volunteer musicians and 51 volunteer guides have participated in the Bedside Performance Program, providing weekly performances for patients at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, the Philadelphia VA Medical Center and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.

In addition to live music, WXPN Musicians On Call includes the CD Pharmacy Program, which provides local hospitals with a CD listening library and CD players for patients’ use. Project Playback pairs up a professional musician with long-term residents at a healthcare facility for six to eight weekly sessions in order to create original songs that are pressed onto a CD. The Music Heals Series offers audio interviews with musicians, therapists and others about the impact music has made in people’s lives, and a special Songs to Lift Your Spirits playlist can be found on Spotify. All information can be found at the WXPN Musicians On Call web page at http://xpn.org/inside-xpn/moc.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door, with special limited VIP mezzanine seating available for $100. Visit WXPN’s website to purchase them at http://xpn.org/events/musicians-on-call-benefit.
