Latin Roots: Nueva Trova from Cuba Transcends It’s State-Supported Origins

April 10, 2014 - Producer Aaron Levinson is back with a new Latin Roots segment on Nueva Trova, a style of music that started in Castro's Cuba in the 1960's but continues today. It started as a political music celebrating the ideals of the revolution but the music lives on, not just in Cuba but abroad.

The artist is also well-known for his work with the band Culture Club and is reportedly working on new material with them as well. After he performs at Free At Noon, Boy George will kick off his tour that same night with a stop at The TLA. Tickets can be purchased here.

Photo credit: Mick Rock Atlanta-based rock band Black Lips released their latest album, Underneath the Rainbow, this March with a twist on their garage rock sound. With it being their ninth full-length, the band decided to focus its sound following 2011’s Arabia Mountain by working with a producer for the first time during their career. Even though the band is mixing things up a bit, they’re keeping to their raw, gritty roots. The Black Lips are also known for their signature intense live shows, so catch them at next Friday’s Free at Noon or later that night at First Unitarian Church. Tickets for that show can be purchased here

Join us for a special acoustic Free at Noon at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia as 3 members of Midlake perform a live midday concert on Friday.

Midlake released its newest and fourth full-length album, Antiphon, just last November, but it didn’t come without some bumps in the road. The Texas-based band’s former frontman, Tim Smith, decided to leave the group in the midst of recording. However, the remaining members of Midlake took this time to reevaluate their former sound, resulting in something completely different than their past three albums. Join them at Friday’s Free at Noon as they showcase their much more experimental, psychedelic sound – a stray from their past folk-rock vibe. After their performance, Midlake will be heading out to Glenside to play at the Keswick Theatre as an opening act for singer/sonwriter Neil Finn. Tickets for their later show can be purchased here.

Join us for a Free At Noon Doubleheader with Hurray for the Riff Raff and The Districts at a live midday concert on Friday.

Alynda Lee Segarra, lead singer of the Louisiana-based band Hurray for the Riff Raff, has got a story tell and is letting the world know through the band’s newest album, Small Town Heroes. At the age of 17, Segarra hopped on a train to escape her life in New York City for a simpler one in New Orleans. Her band, Hurray for the Riff Raff, reflects that same type of simpler sound. Since they formed in 2007, the band’s released one EP and six full-length albums. Small Town Heroes follows similar suit of the sound heard on the former albums, showcasing raw, bluesy Americana folk. The band will be leaving for a show in Massachusetts after their Free at Noon performance, but will return to Philly on April 8 at World Cafe Live. Tickets for that show can be purchased here.

Philadelphia favorites The Districts have had an exciting couple of months. After signing with Fat Possum Records in November and producing a self-titled EP with the label, they’ve taken off, embarking on a nationwide tour with stops at SXSW and recently announcing a future appearance at this year’s Lollapalooza. But before then, their foot-stomping original sound is set to play at Friday’s double header, filling the room with their rock n’ roll blended with folk sound. The band plays the Sellersville Theater before Free at Noon on Wednesday, April 2nd, and will be back in Philly in May for the annual NonCOMMvention.
