XPN Artist To Watch JD McPherson returns to Philadelphia on Friday November 2 for a sold out show at Johnny Brendas, and he'll be our guest for a Free At Noon concert.
Photo credit Samantha Franklin Oklahoma artist JD McPherson and his band brought their retro-infused rock & roll sound to the XPoNential Music Festival last summer. And, his debut album, Signs and Signifiers, released in April was both an XPN Featured Album of the Week, and CD of the Month this year. The album captures his appreciation of classic rock 'n' roll; the guitarist's gift lies in his ability to repackage timeless sounds into catchy, relevant tunes. McPherson also made a stop on the World Cafe with host David Dye in August. Listen to J.D. McPherson's World Cafe session on TheKey.XPN.org, and check out the video of him performing "Farmer John" onstage at the Festival.

Honestly, what’s not to like about JD McPherson? The teacher turned rocker dials up a sound reminiscent of rock and roll’s early days on Signs & Signifiers, his first album. His style and attitude are both representative of those times, but noticeably his influences run the gamut from rockabilly to soul, from punk to hip-hop. It’s that combination of appreciation and living in present that makes Signs & Signifiers an absolute gem.
