Two things have come together for Rosanne Cash in recent years: her deepening understanding of her place in her father Johnny Cash's legacy, and her desire to only make albums that expand on a theme.
Janurary 23, 2014 - This week on Conversations from the World Cafe, Rosanne Cash joins host David Dye in the studio. Rosanne Cash just released a brand new album The River & the Thread. It is her third record in a trio of discs inspired by life her father Johnny Cash. While in the past she may have shied away from her father’s renown, she has come to embrace it since his death in 2003, first putting out 2006’s Black Cadillac and then 2009’s The List.

Eclectic singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash joins us for next week's Free at Noon concert. The XPN favorite and daughter of country music legend Johnny Cash is readying her latest full length record, The River and the Thread, for an January 2014 release. The album, written with her husband and longtime collaborator John Leventhal, will be her first album of original material since 2006's acclaimed Black Cadillac. Cash also earned praise recently for 2009's The List, an album covering 12 country music classics from a list her father gave her at age 18. She plays Free at Noon preceding a three-night stint of programming at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

What started as a "list" to educate his daughter about the roots of country music has transformed itself into both a tribute to the character of Johnny Cash and an inspired new release from his daughter, Rosanne. Rosanne Cash's new album simply titled The List is more than a just a collection of favorites. It's an insightful look at the musical lineage of one of the great American music families.
