The Head & The Heart - The Head & The Heart - Sup Pop

It didn’t take long for the Seattle band The Head And The Heart to find an audience for their brand of indie folk and pop. In fact, within a year of coming together at a local open mic night the six piece band had released their self-titled debut album and become a standout of a hearty Seattle music scene. Following in the steps of fellow indie-folksters like Fleet Foxes, The Head And The Heart signed to the local Sub Pop label who have re-released the group’s introduction this year.

As a band, all the members of The Head And The Heart come from different backgrounds and the music is driven by the sum of its parts. Endearing multi-part harmonies, playful piano lines and a youthful approach to a folk music make for uplifting and refreshing moments like “Ghosts” and “Coeur D’Alene.” Songwriting duties are shared, but the bulk of the album spotlights Josiah Johnson and Jon Russell as partnering frontmen. Quickly apparent is that their partnership is unique one. The album’s cohesive tone and groove is at its best a result of their ability to work so seamlessly together. Also, don’t overlook the work of singer and violinist Charity Rose whose vocals give the album and these songs an extra dimension.

It’s rare to find a band that offers up as much charm and character on their debut effort as The Head And The Heart. And it’s those intangibles that make not only their union as a band, but their songs so successful. It’s been a quick ascent for The Head And The Heart, and the good news is they’re just getting started.
