Various Artists - "Enjoy Every Sandwich: Songs of Warren Zevon" (Artemis)

On September 7 2003, the great singer-songwriter Warren Zevon passed away from a rare form of cancer. Originally given three months to live, Zevon went in to the studio a month after this diagnosis in August 2002 and began recording what became not only his last album, but one of his best, The Wind. For that album he called on some of his closest friends and collaborators throughout the years. Well documented by VH-1, the documentary also included footage from Warren’s appearance on the David Letterman Show in October 2002 in which the entire show was devoted to Zevon.

During the interview with Letterman, Zevon was in rare, fairly typical humor given that he was in immense pain. During a serious moment in the interview, Letterman asked Zevon, "From your perspective now ... do you know something about life and death, that I don't know?" Zevon responded: "Not unless, I know how much you're suppose to enjoy every sandwich." It was classic Zevon - a line that has become the modern day equivalent to “stop and smell the roses.”

Many of the same friends who helped Zevon record The Wind, show up on this great tribute album. Bruce Springsteen (“My Ride’s Here”), Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt (“Poor Poor Pitiful Me”), Bob Dylan (“Mutineer”), The Pixies (“Ain’t That Pretty At All”), Don Henley (“Searching For A Heart:”), Jill Sobule (“Don’t Let Us Get Sick”), Jakob Dylan and The Wallflowers (“Lawyers, Guns and Money”), Steve Earle (“Reconsider Me”), Pete Yorn (“Splendid Isolation”), David Lindley and Ry Cooder (“Monkey Wash Donkey Rinse”), Billy Bob Thornton (“The Wind”), Jorge Calderon and Jennifer Warnes (“Keep Me In Your Heart”), make up the great cast of musicians and singers on the album. There are also two never-released before Zevon-penned tunes, including one by Zevon’s son, Jordan. And yes, even Adam Sandler’s treatment of the Zevon classic “Werewolves Of London” is pretty good.

If you’re a fan of Zevon, you’ll agree that this is a heartfelt collection of songs that confirms his status as one of the truly great – albeit underrated songwriters of our time.
