WXPN Names John Butler Trio Its Next Pick In The XPN Artists To Watch Series (March 2005)

Aussie based John Butler Trio gets month-long spotlight starting Monday, February 28 PHILADELPHIA, PA - WXPN, the non-commercial radio station from the University of Pennsylvania, has dubbed Australian sensation John Butler Trio as the XPN Artist To Watch for March 2005. On Monday, February 28 in the four o'clock hour, host David Dye will present the first of the month's daily on-air segments featuring John Butler Trio.

Already a musical phenomenon in Australia, John Butler Trio makes its American major label debut on March 15 with Sunrise Over Sea on LAVA Records. The albums' 13 tracks reflect Butler's unique musical hybrid of blues, folk, reggae, country, funk, rock and hip-hop. Along with Butler, the Trio is made up of Nicky Bomba on drums and Shannon Birchall on upright bass.

"This is a real band and a real album... the three obviously connect on many emotional levels to play this well together, and the album succeeds as a whole. It's more than just a collection of songs," said Dye.

"The diversity on this album is especially impressive," added Dan Reed, WXPN music director. "Whether it be the beautiful, grandiose, Zeppelin-esque swagger of 'What You Want' or the syncopated pop of 'Zebra,' John Butler Trio pulls it off with confidence."

The XPN Artists To Watch series reflects WXPN's commitment to nurturing fresh, new talent and exposing listeners to the best new music. Each month, the XPN Artists To Watch series spotlights a different up-and-coming performer who has produced an album or body of work that demonstrates outstanding vision, creativity and songwriting ability. Month-long on-air promotion is combined with online features that are created to help audiences discover and connect with each artist.
