WXPN “885 All Time Greatest Artists” Countdown Begins October 9

Station to Air Results From Poll of Thousands of Listeners

PHILADELPHIA, PA The votes from the online survey are in and listeners of WXPN 88.5 FM, the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A music and member-supported radio station from the University of Pennsylvania, will hear the results when the station begins its playback of the "885 All Time Greatest Artists." The countdown begins at 6:00 a.m. on October 9 and concludes with the number one artist being played around October 24.

More than 6,400 listeners, including 35 musicians and voters from as far away as Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Norway, and Scotland, participated in the poll, which asked them to cast their vote for up to 20 different artists. Among the musicians who participated are G. Love, Odetta, Gary U.S. Bonds, Janis Ian, Robert Randolph, and Vienna Teng.

WXPN hosted the voting on its new XPoNential Music On Demand website (www.xpnonentialmusic.org) which was promoted and accessible from www.xpn.org. Voters had from August 1 through September 10 to submit their Top 10 favorite artists and name up to another ten artists for honorable mention. The survey documented 4,527 artists who received votes. Some WXPN staff and musician picks are posted at www.xponentialmusic.org where the results of the playback will be revealed online as it happens on the air.

"This programming event captivates listeners with its unusual and diverse mix of music that happens through the voting process," said Roger LaMay, WXPN general manager. “There’s no other place in radio that you will hear Tchaikovsky and Audioslave back to back. The radio industry would refer to this music segue as a ‘train wreck.' We call it the 885 All Time Greatest Artist Countdown. We also call it fun.”

The playback will run from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from Mondays through Fridays, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sundays, through October 24.

"We will feature one song from artists 885 to 501, two songs from artists 500 to 101, three songs from artists 100-51, four songs from artists 50-11," said Bruce Warren, WXPN program director. "We will devote one hour to artists number ten through two and five hours to the number one All Time Greatest Artist on the final day.”
