WXPN ARTIST TO WATCH FOR OCTOBER: Sasha Dobson

PHILADELPHIA, PA WXPN, the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A music and noncommercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, will name Sasha Dobson the XPN Artist To Watch for October. Host David Dye, will present the first of the month’s on-air segments focusing on this singer-songwriter on Monday, October 2nd during the four o’clock hour.

Twenty-six year old Dobson, originally from Santa Cruz, CA, where she sang jazz professionally from the age of 16, now lives in New York City and performs original songs (by her and her band) in clubs around the Lower East Side. Her debut album, Modern Romance, was released in August on Secret Sun Recordings, the new label of singer/songwriter Jesse Harris. Harris produced the album along with singer/songwriter Richard Julian, and both contributed guitar work and songwriting.

“Sasha is a wonderfully talented new singer-songwriter and with GRAMMY-award winning Jesse Harris and New York based musician Richard Julian by her side, the band has made a beautiful collection of acoustic jazz-flavored music,” said Bruce Warren, assistant general manager for programming at WXPN. “Anyone who can cover the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs and Duke Ellington on the same album is alright with us.”

“Sasha Dobson has created a very solid album, and we think her voice and her songwriting abilities will make her a viable talent for years to come,” added Dan Reed, WXPN music director. “Modern Romance is a very, very strong start. She obviously has a knack for telling stories, and the tunes are all well-crafted and well-played.”

The XPN Artists To Watch series reflects WXPN’s commitment to nurturing fresh, new talent and exposing listeners to the best new music. Each month, the XPN Artists To Watch series spotlights a different up-and-coming performer who has produced an album or body of work that demonstrates outstanding vision, creativity and songwriting ability. Month-long on-air promotion is combined with online features to help audiences discover each artist.
