KT Tunstall Named First “XPN Artist To Watch” in 2006

PHILADELPHIA, PA – WXPN, the recognized leader in Triple A music and noncommercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, is kicking off its second year of Artist To Watch monthly spotlights by selecting KT Tunstall, its January pick. On Monday, January 2 in the four o’clock hour, host David Dye will present the first of the month’s on-air segments profiling this singer-songwriter with the self-proclaimed “Chinese blood, a Scottish heart, great legwarmers, and a cool name.”

“We’re smitten with KT’s debut album ‘Eye To The Telescope.’ On it she bares her soul with raw emotion," said Dan Reed, music director for WXPN. “She's a little bit Kirsty MacColl, a little bit ‘Rumours’-era Fleetwood Mac and her songs are sassy, wistful, and instantly memorable."

"’Telescope" is a very diverse collection of songs and on it she incorporates folk and rock and pop with a modern twist thanks to the excellent production,” added Bruce Warren, assistant general manager for programming at WXPN. “A fan of Patti Smith, Ella Fitzgerald and Carole King, Tunstall - who plays guitar and piano - has created a unique, mature debut album deserving of repeated listenings, and our first Artist To Watch accolades for the New Year."

The XPN Artists To Watch series reflects WXPN’s commitment to nurturing fresh, new talent and exposing listeners to the best new music. Each month, the XPN Artists To Watch series spotlights a different up-and-coming performer who has produced an album or body of work that demonstrates outstanding vision, creativity and songwriting ability. Month-long on-air promotion is combined with online features to help audiences discover and connect with each artist.
