WXPN Artist To Watch for November: Rodrigo Y Gabriela

PHILADELPHIA, PA WXPN, the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A music and noncommercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, will name acoustic music duo Rodrigo y Gabriela the XPN Artist To Watch for November. Host David Dye will present the first of the month’s on-air segments focusing on the pair on Monday, October 30 during the four o’clock hour. Dye will also introduce them to a national audience during the broadcast of his World Cafe® show on Tuesday, October 31 (airing at 2:00pm on WXPN and xpn.org/listen).

Rodrigo y Gabriela are Dublin-based, Mexicans Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero. They play flamenco guitar and are influenced as much by Metallica and Led Zeppelin (which they cover on their debut) as they are influenced by Al DiMeola and Strunz and Farah. Their self-titled US debut is on ATO Records and was produced by John Leckie.

“We've been playing the album, however when they came in to record for the World Cafe show and we saw them live they blew our minds,” said Bruce Warren, assistant general manager for programming at WXPN.

“Rodrigo y Gabriela are an absolutely amazing experience, both on disc and live,” added Dan Reed, WXPN music director. “They play with passion, and they're more rock ‘n’ roll than anything else. I was hooked after seeing them play one song live.”

The XPN Artists To Watch series reflects WXPN’s commitment to nurturing fresh, new talent and exposing listeners to the best new music. Each month, the XPN Artists To Watch series spotlights a different up-and-coming performer who has produced an album or body of work that demonstrates outstanding vision, creativity and songwriting ability. Month-long on-air promotion is combined with online features to help audiences discover each artist.
