WXPN Calls Multinational Pop Quartet the “Guillemots” April’s Artist To Watch

PHILADELPHIA, PA – WXPN, the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A music and noncommercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, names Guillemots the Artist To Watch for April. Host David Dye will present the first of the month’s on-air segments focusing on this rising British-based pop band on Monday, April 3 in the four o’clock hour.

The Guillemots, comprised of English singer and classically trained pianist Fyfe Dangerfield, Brazilian guitarist MC Lord Magrao, Scottish percussionist Rican Caol, and Canadian double bassist Aristazabal Hawkes, are skilled at fusing unique sonic textures to their catchy and uplifting music. The end result is a completely modern sounding pop ensemble that is able to challenge the listener while also paying homage to the rich history of classic pop songwriting. Their album From the Cliffs was released in March 2006. "The Guillemots are one of this year’s most adventurous and exciting new musical discoveries,” said Dan Reed, music director for WXPN. “And their debut EP, From the Cliffs showcases the band’s genre hopping, their broad musical knowledge and lead singer Fyfe Dangerfield's charismatic vocals and kaleidoscopic lyrics."

“Their debut is essentially a pop album but they draw so easily on other genres of music including psychedelia, soul, electronica with a feel for improvisation and sophistication,” added Bruce Warren, assistant general manager of programming for WXPN.

The XPN Artists To Watch series reflects WXPN’s commitment to nurturing fresh, new talent and exposing listeners to the best new music. Each month, the XPN Artists To Watch series spotlights a different up-and-coming performer who has produced an album or body of work that demonstrates outstanding vision, creativity and songwriting ability. Month-long on-air promotion is combined with online features to help audiences discover each artist.
