WXPN’s National Program World Cafe Honored With ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for Radio Broadcasting

Awards Ceremony December 7 in New York City

Philadelphia, PA WORLD CAFE,® the award-winning daily music program distributed by NPR and produced by WXPN, the public radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, will receive the Award for Radio Broadcasting at the 39th Annual ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards Reception on December 7 at Lincoln Center in New York City.

David Dye created and began hosting World Cafe in 1991. The show is syndicated by NPR to nearly 200 stations nationally. Candid interviews and live appearances are the hallmarks of the daily radio program. Dye’s guests have included musical legends such as Joni Mitchell, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, and Dolly Parton. Dye is best known for discovering and introducing listeners to new and emerging talent like Norah Jones, John Mayer, and Damien Rice before they became more widely popular. The show’s producer is Kimberly Junod and executive producer is Bruce Warren.

“This is fantastic!” said Dye. “And it’s particularly gratifying for WXPN and World Cafe to be recognized with this national honor just as we’re kicking off our special 15th anniversary retrospective programs.”

The popularity of World Cafe inspired the 2004 creation of World Cafe Live, a restaurant and performance venue located in the renovated historic building in West Philadelphia where the show is produced. The show has spawned 22 volumes of Live @ the World Cafe® series of CDs featuring the live performances from the program over the past 15 years.

The ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards recognize outstanding print, broadcast and new media coverage of music. Previous public radio winners in the Radio Broadcasting category include Fresh Air, American Routes, and Pipedreams. Over the years, tens of thousands of dollars have been distributed in cash prizes to winning authors, journalists and broadcast producers and personalities. The members of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards Panel for 2006 are Charles Dodge, Paul Moravec, Frank Oteri, Richard Miller, Julie Flanders, David Massengill, Matthew Shipp, Larry John McNally, and Wesley Stace.
