Non-COMMvention Expands to Four Days, Moves to Philadelphia May 2008

Registration Begins Monday January 7, Features All-time Lowest Fees

PHILADELPHIA, PA., - WXPN, the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A (Album Adult Alternative) music and a non-commercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania today announced that the NON-COMMvention will move to its new home in Philadelphia at WXPN/World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut Street and the Inn at Penn, 3600 Walnut Street and be held May 28th-31. The convention also expands from three to four days. Registration for this event begins Monday, January 7.

Now in its seventh year, the NON-COMMvention is held each May and offers non-commercial, Triple A radio stations a three-day new music showcase featuring new and established artists. A fourth day was added this year to include business topics such as programming best practices, marketing and, public radio’s life’s blood, fundraising.

“The registration fees have been reduced nearly sixty percent for radio stations making this the most affordable industry conference,” said Roger LaMay WXPN general manager. “This event has grown from about 100 people in 2001 to an all-time high of 600 in 2005. This year, the more affordable fee structure coupled with the additional day focused on business topics should attract even more attendees and provide them with a wealth of practical information to take back to their markets and make an impact for their listening audience.”

NON-COMM was first established in 2001 by Gerry Weston, the head of public radio partnership in Louisville, Kentucky and Dan Reed, formerly the PD of WFPK, now the WXPN Music Director.

“Since 2001, NON-COMM has unquestionably become the number one music event for Triple A Radio,” said Dan Reed. “Bringing the convention to Philadelphia, which has several excellent venues to see and hear music including World Cafe Live and is an easy commute from New York, means not only will we continue to preview the best new music but also exceed our attendees’ expectations of the music side of this event.”

Non-commercial radio stations are generally licensed to local communities, friends groups or universities and most are affiliated with National Public Radio. Public radio stations are non-profit entities relying heavily on listener support.
