PHILADELPHIA, PA – WXPN, the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A music and non-commercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, names Passion Pit as its June Artist To Watch. WXPN Music Director and Host Dan Reed will present the first of the month’s on-air segments on Monday, June 1 in the 4 p.m. hour.
Boston-based Passion Pit first snuck into the limelight in late 2008 with their debut EP, Chunk of Change. Though originally intended as a Valentine's Day gift for front man Michael Angelakos' then-girlfriend, the EP and its standout song, "Sleepyhead," slowly began to garner attention for its irresistible mix of rock and melodic electronica, claiming praise from CMJ, Pitchfork, the BBC and MTV. Before the year was out, the band had signed to Frenchkiss Records and set a release for their debut LP, Manners. Released in May, the album melds synths, samplers, live rhythm and guitar to create a sound somewhere between the popular electronica of recent years and indie rock – a new kind of dance music that marries the melody of indie pop with the energy of electronic music. And with a touring resume that already bolsters opening sets for Death Cab for Cutie, Girl Talk and These New Puritans, Passion Pit are poised to make a big impression in 2009.
“Boston’s Passion Pit are putting the club back in clubland with their debut album,” said Bruce Warren, Assistant General Manager of Programming for WXPN. “Sort of like an indie-rock take on Human League with touches of New Order, MGMT and Hot Chip all mixed together, the band has crafted a fun and funky debut.”
“Passion Pit has tons of buzz, but a lot of substance to go with it,” said Dan Reed, WXPN Music Director. ”This is the emergence of a very promising, organic songwriter in front man Angelakos.”
