WXPN Launches Start Making Cents Web Series Radio station produces new web series about current state of music business

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. WXPN (http://www.xpn.org), the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A (Adult Album Alternative) music and noncommercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, will debut Start Making Cents, a web-based series about the current state of the music business, on February 1.

Produced by WXPN Senior Producer and On-Air Host Tracey Tanenbaum, Start Making Cents will feature interviews with musicians Jill Sobule and Ingrid Michaelson, as well as Bloodshot Records owners Nan Warshaw and Rob Miller, Canvasback Records’ Steve Ralbovsky and Brian McTear of Weathervane Music Organization.

The series will cover a broad range of topics including the effect of the internet and technology on the industry, the changing relationship between musicians and fans, the evolving nature of artist development, new artists’ strategies for survival in the music industry, whether artists need labels and the impact of file sharing.

"The entire business model of the music industry has changed dramatically in recent years," said Tanenbaum. "With the advent of the internet and file sharing, musicians are no longer able to make a living off of record sales as in the past, and have been forced to rethink how they market themselves to fans. This series will discuss these issues and showcase ways musicians and labels are coping with today’s challenges."
