WXPN Features Warpaint as the XPN Artist To Watch for December

PHILADELPHIA, PA – WXPN, the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A music and non-commercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, names Warpaint as its December Artist To Watch. WXPN Music Director and Host Dan Reed will present the first of the month’s on-air segments on Wednesday, December 1, in the 4 p.m. hour.

This all-girl quartet from Los Angeles was formed originally in 2004, and has made great strides in the past few years. With an EP release in 2008 and a full-length album, The Fool, debuting last month, Warpaint is beginning to gain broad popularity in the US and abroad. Musically, the group is described as having ethereal and dreamy-pop arrangements featuring intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals, and driving post-punk rhythms; they sound like nothing else out today but manage to still have a familiar element. The band’s members, Emily Kokal, Theresa Wayman, Jenny Lee Lindberg, and Stella Mozgawa, collaborated as a group with John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers on their self-released EP Exquisite Corpse, which was then re-released worldwide on the Manimal Vinyl label in 2009. Warpaint later signed to Rough Trade Records, and have opened for a number of notables, including Yeasayer, The xx, The Slits, Band of Horses, and Vampire Weekend, as well as increasingly performing as headliners. The group also performed in August 2010 at Lollapalooza in Chicago, and has an international tour in the works for 2011.

“Warpaint is a very interesting group,” says Dan Reed. “They deftly mix atmospherics and songwriting craft, and the result is pleasantly hypnotic.”

“Musically, the band covers warm, ethereal and experimental territory with dream-pop arrangements, some quirky yet accessible rhythms and enchanting melodies,” says Bruce Warren, Assistant General Manager of Programming for WXPN. “They sound like nothing else out today yet are still very familiar at the same time.”
