Elvis Costello and The Roots

October 4, 2013 - This week on Conversations from the World Cafe, Elvis Costello and The Roots join host David Dye in the studio. In 1976 Elvis Costello released his acclaimed debut My Aim is True. In the years that followed he was lauded for his pioneering new wave music with The Attractions as well as the solo work he did after splitting with that group.
But the clever songwriter is also well known for an interesting variety of collaborations over the past two decades, working with New Orleans elderstatesman Allen Toussaint, rock star Paul McCartney, and classical singer Anne Sofie Von Otter, among others. On his newest disc he joins forces with the hip hop band The Roots, a highly sympathetic match up in that the group also looks to do things just a little bit differently than their contemporaries. The Roots have been the house band on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon since the show began in 2009 and are known for incorporating live instruments into a hip hop based sound. They are also not afraid to branch out into other genres. Together The Roots and Elvis Costello have created the brand new album Wise Up Ghost. Roots drummer Ahmir Questlove Thompson and Costello share what made their work together so special. That and more this week on Conversations from the World Cafe!
