Their break came in 2006 when their debut album, Rodrigo y Gabriela, took the top spot on the Irish charts. Their 2008 album, 11:11, became a mainstream success in the United States, boosted by features on MTV and ESPN Monday Night Football. They have performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and for Barack Obama. Their music has been featured on the big screen twice in 2011, on the scores of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Puss in Boots. Despite their busy schedule, the release of a new album has been anticipated.
Area 52 is nothing if not bold. Rodrigo y Gabriela are joined by C.U.B.A., a thirteen-piece Cuban orchestra. Although there is no new material, the duo revisits their previous albums with a deft and experimental treatment. The fast, heavy riffs of acoustic guitar are transformed by the brass section. The group pays homage to their Mexican heritage through a salsa-esque reworking of Hanuman, but also expands their Latin borders with C.U.B.A.'s zesty Cuban Jazz. Area 52 has met with critical success, hailed as a foray into unknown territory by an already adventurous band.
