The Zombies

When The Zombies' song "Time of the Season" grew into a popular radio hit in 1969, the baroque pop UK group had already disbanded, following a stint in the British Invasion.

For over two decades, each member developed his own sound, and then they all came back together sporadically in the '90s, full-time in 2000s. Half a century after The Zombies' inception, this year marks their sixth studio album, "Breathe Out, Breathe In".

Comprised of original frontmen Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone, as well as a shifting lineup of supporting musicians, The Zombies have stayed true to their trademark blend of rock, pop and psychedelia. With Blunstone's airy vocals and Argent's jazz-infused keyboard melodies, the Zombies' sound evokes the  musicianship of the Beatles and the sunny pop of the Beach Boys. Though they struggled to hit the mainstream, their influence can be heard in bands ranging from the Kinks and the Doors to the Byrds and Left Banke. "Breathe Out, Breathe In" stays the course of classic Zombies' sound, with plenty of rich harmonies, deft organ, and storied sentimentality--all the more impressive since it was recorded in front of a live audience.

This interview, divided into two parts, focuses first on the band's formation in the early '60s, and later on the Zombies' most recent work. The band members also discuss influences such as the late Elvis Presley, and the reincarnation of the Zombies in the '90s.
