Laura Veirs On World Cafe

  • Listen:
Laura Veirs on World Cafe Laura Veirs' new album, The Lookout, was released today. It features guest vocals from some of her pals, Jim James of My Morning Jacket and Sufjan Stevens. And it was produced by Tucker Martine, who's worked with heavy-hitters like The Decemberists and Mavis Staples. He's also Laura's husband, and they've taken their two children on tour. We'll hear about parenting on the road, and some of Laura's other creative projects today, like her children’s book, and a collaborative record with Neko Case and kd lang. That's coming up on the next World Cafe, with host Talia Schlanger.
Veirs performs songs from The Lookout, for which she originally wrote over 100 songs, and explains how a set of creative constraints helped her arrive at its gauzy new sound.
Before the release of her latest LP, The Lookout, Laura Veirs revealed some stats about its creation, in the form of hand scribbled post-it notes shared on Instagram. Among those are the first word sung on the album ("scuttling"), the last word ("fire"), and the number of children who appear on the recordings (three).
