You might remember Brooklyn's Red Baraat as the eight-piece band that had you on your feet and moving at The XPoNential Music Festival this summer. They closed out the Marina Stage on Friday night with a set punctuated by swift percussion, lively horns and high energy.

The band, led by dhol player Sunny Jain, puts a spin on the Bhangra music of Northern India by mixing in a jazzy brass section and injecting the party vibe of a funk band. The band has released three albums on SinJ Records, most recently Shruggy Ji. They play The Blockely on November 22 with like-minded locals West Philadelphia Orchestra, and they join us earlier that day as our Free at Noon guests.
Relive their XPoNential Music Festival performance.

Red Baraat’s Raucous Party Blends Banghra Music With New Orleans and Even Hip Hop

July 15, 2013 - At a Red Baraat show you may not even notice the music you are dancing and madly waving your hands and butt to is kinda sophisticated. The combination of Punjabi Banghra music, New Orleans style jazz, go-go and even hip hop is so seamless and the vibe of the party is so exuberant that barriers fall down.
Formed in 2008, Red Baraat is a pioneering eight-piece band from Brooklyn, New York. Conceived by Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound -- a merging of hard driving North Indian bhangra rhythms with elements of jazz, go-go, brass funk, and hip-hop.
