Sense of Place: Portland
World Cafe visited the second stop on our Sense of Place tour. This time around we highlight that Mecca for all things indie, Portland, Oregon. We made the transcontinental trek in September and returned with interviews from Colin Meloy of The Decemberists, producer Tucker Martine and a history of Portland music along with a lot more. All this week, you'll find videos, interactive maps and lots of audio, right here. And, there's a six-song free download of Portland bands for you as well. And, be sure to tune into World Cafe on XPN (2-4pm ET)! Sense of Place series made possible by a grant from The Wyncote Foundation. Videos for Sense of Place by Bob G Media.

A big thanks to these folks who helped us tour Portland.

  • Colin Meloy Colin Meloy is a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist known primarily as the frontman for the folk-rock band The Decemberists. The Decemberists released a brand new live album We All Raise Our Voices to the Air on March 13, 2012. In addition to his main project, he has also fronted the bands Happy Cactus, Tarkio, and his own solo project, mainly covering other artists. He is also the author of a children’s book titled Wildwood. The Montana native has lived in Portland since 1999.
  • Tucker Martine Tucker Martine is a Grammy nominated producer, composer, and musician. He has worked with a large variety of artists, from My Morning Jacket and The Decemberists to Laura Veirs and Bill Frisell. The Nashville native combines modern recording techniques with more traditional practices in order to create a sound that brings out the unique qualities of the acts with whom he is working. He has lived in Portland, OR, for 5 years; he runs Flora Recording & Playback there. In 2009 Paste named him one of the 10 Best Producers of the Decade.
