This week, Caroline Rose released her new single “Love / Lover / Friend” and announced a North American tour, with a Philadelphia show at Union Transfer on April 11th. The new song is her first since 2020’s Superstar, Rose’s tongue-in-cheek commentary on the music industry that ironically attracted her largest audience yet.
“Love / Lover / Friend,” however, shows Rose in an entirely different mood. Her sonic ambitions are just as vast, but now more soft and meditative. Experimenting with DIY tape effects and modular synthesis, Rose put together this single with a combination of analog and digital processes.
“There is a feeling that comes with recording in a certain way. When you’re dealing with tape, you’re printing something that decays. There is a life-like element to it. When you work in digital formats, there’s a kind of detachment from that humanness. I wanted to feel like both.”
