Load-In to Load-Out With Red Fang: A photo essay by Matthew Shaver

I shoot the breeze with a few people I’ve never met, but tell I could be friends with.

I start to feel a little useless, watching the workers work, so I wander back to the back room, and find myself alone with Red Fang’s own Aaron Beam.

One of my rock gods, who it turns out is only a man. I take every lesson I’ve ever learned from every serious journalist I’ve ever met in my life and muster up the courage to ask that most existential of questions “How are you doing?” You know, I expected the phoniest of answers ever. He knew who I was, he knew that whatever he told me could be reported back on and printed or whatever it is journalists are supposed to do. But, he gave me, what I believe to be the rawest answer possible. I wasn’t recording so I will paraphrase: “It’s okay. The presales weren’t what we expected, but hopefully it will pick up.”

It sticks with me the whole night. Burning a hole in the back of my head. I find myself in the trenches with the band, with the employees, saying over and over again “Ok people, this show is going to kick ass, please, please, come out tonight.” Please.
