Philadelphia, PA - WXPN, the member-supported public radio station from the University of Pennsylvania, today announced that Y-Rock On XPN will begin broadcasting over the air 24/7 as the station’s secondary radio channel on HD beginning May 1, 2007 at noon. This HD broadcast is only available in the Philadelphia area at this time.

WXPN launched Y-Rock On XPN as a separate music programming service in August 2006. Since then, Y-Rock On XPN has only been available via broadcast on WXPN (88.5FM) 10 hours per week and via the Internet 24/7 at YRockOnXPN.org. WXPN is now using HD Radio technology to take the next step in the evolution of Y-Rock On XPN and provide it with a dedicated position on the HD FM dial. Y-Rock On XPN will continue to be available on the Internet and to broadcast three nights a week on WXPN.

“Nearly 500,000 alternative music fans in Philadelphia have been without a 24/7 radio station since Y100 left the airwaves in February 2005, said Roger LaMay, General Manager of WXPN. “Launching Y-Rock On XPN as a our secondary channel, makes this programming even more accessible for those displaced fans, particularly as awareness and sale of HD radios grows.”

“We’re honored to become the HD2 service of WXPN,” said Jim McGuinn, XPN Host and Y-Rock On XPN Program Director. “Y-Rock On XPN started in my spare bedroom and we’re proud of the growth and evolution of the service – increasing our availability by programming on this platform will enable us to reach more people – it’s something that our listeners have been asking for since the advent of the HD technology.”

“This is about improving the choices for our listeners,” said Bruce Warren, Assistant General Manager of Programming for WXPN. “We were lucky enough to preserve a Philadelphia music tradition through the Internet. Now, we’re very happy to restore it, completely, to the airwaves –– where it belongs, with HD Radio.”
